Houston's telescopes

I travelled to Houston on company business and spent a couple of weekends there. One of those weekends, I visited the Brazos Bend State Park. While the park itself is a nice place to have a picnic and watch alligators, the observatory in the park had me really excited. The observatory has a three telescopes and a star gazing session each Saturday night. I had never been in an observatory before and I was looking forward to the night.

The night's session started with a slide show on the observatories telescopes and what we can expect to see that night. The turn out was excellent for a weekly event. There were a large number of kids with their parents. After the slideshow, we headed upstairs to the telescopes. All the area was lit with dim red lights. It had something to do with red not interfering with the telescopes functioning or night vision.

I spent the next couple hours like a kid in a candy store. I got a look through each of the three telescopes. The telescope in the central dome was huge. I just wonder how much engineering goes into building and controlling such a machine.

The really cool part was that a bunch of smaller telescopes were setup on the terrace. These were brought by astronomers/enthusiasts around Houston. There were different kinds of telescopes each covering a different section of the sky. One of them had a TV connected to it. This one was pointed at the moon and I could see the rough lunar surface like the back of my hand. I went around from telescope to telescope enjoying myself. Very knowledgeable people. All you had to do was show up at the telescope and they would patiently explain what the telescope is pointed at and answer all the questions. The evening completely excited my inner geek. Atleast one Saturday put to good use.

Chasm: A great flash game

A great little game if you have some time at your hand. Chasm has a simple premise. Chasmton's water supply has broken down and you have to fix it. Throw in very good graphics, a funky looking character( a beaver no less) and well suited background score. Oh I forgot! You also get to explore the Chasm and solve puzzles like in Crystal Maze.

Will FedEx reach its destination?

In a little over three hours, Federer takes on Nadal again in the French open finals. Will he win this time? I don't think so. Federer is not at his best this year. In the semi's he had difficulty closing out sets, made a lot of errors and looked vulnerable. Nadal steamrolled Djokovic on the way. But you never know. I ,for my part, hope Federer wins. As an aside, there is an interesting article on Wimbledon.org drawing parallels between Bjorg on his quest for a sixth Wimbledon title and Federer. Bjorg did not win a sixth title. Will Federer win it?

Great Match

The IPL final turned out to be a good match. I expected the match to be a cake walk for RR once they restricted the CSK to a low total. As it turns out Chennai had other plans. They played their hearts out and took the match to the last ball. Had a couple of chances gone their way, Chennai would be the ones basking in all IPL glory. The most enduring image I will have of the final is Dhoni calling his men into a huddle at the end of the match. A general marshalling his men after an honorable defeat. It is very rare to see such a gesture on the cricket field. I am sure they will return a stronger team next year. ps: What would happen when Shane Warne is no longer physically fit, say three years from now ? Will he continue to coach the Royals? Given his anti-authoritarian streak, it would be ironic.

Anticlimax in the offing for IPL?

Well who knows. After 40 days of close matches, two one-sided semifinals are not what I expected. I do not have high hopes for the final. Based on the form, Rajasthan Royals should win by a clear margin. But the thing to look forward to is how Dhoni the captain performs tomorrow ? Is he really a captain in the mould of Mike Brearely or Is he going through a purple patch? Giving the first over in Semifinal to Murali was right out of Martin Crowe's playbook. Can he come up with something to stop Shane Watson & Co? We will know in a day.

Birds of India

Every time I walk to the pantry in office, I pass a cube with fantastic pictures of birds framed all over. Today I talked to the guy. Turns out he is the photographer. His website is full of high quality pictures. A must visit if you are a nature lover. http://www.clementfrancis.com
